MSSNY eNews: February 23, 2022 – Burnout Up 5 Percentage Points for Physicians

Burnout Up 5 Percentage Points for Physicians
Forty-seven percent of physicians reported feeling burned out last year, up from 42 percent in 2020, according to Medscape’s 2021 Physician Burnout & Depression.

For the report, Medscape surveyed 13,069 physicians in 29 specialties from June 29-Sept. 26, 2021.

Four report findings:

  1. Both male and female physicians reported higher rates of burnout in 2021 compared with the previous year. Fifty-one percent of women said they were burned out in 2020, compared to 56 percent in 2021. For men, the year-over-year increase was from 36 percent to 41 percent.
  2. Emergency medicine physicians had the highest rates of burnout among all specialties in 2021 (60 percent), followed by critical care physicians (56 percent). In 2020, critical care physicians reported the highest burnout rates.
  3. While 60 percent of physicians cited overwhelming bureaucratic demands as the largest contributor to their burnout, followed by a lack of respect from administrators, colleagues and staff (39 percent) and long hours (34 percent), 34 percent connected burnout to their own personality traits or individual frailty.
  4. Forty-nine percent of physicians with depression said they can deal with it without professional help, but 43 percent said they would not seek help because of fears of disclosure to the medical board.

Feeling Stressed? Connect with a Physician Peer
The Medical Society of the State of New York now offers physicians, residents, and medical students a completely confidential and anonymous opportunity to talk with a peer about some of life’s stressors. MSSNY’s Physician Wellness and Resiliency Committee launched a Peer-2-Peer (P2P) program to assist colleagues in need of help in dealing with work and family stressors.

MSSNY has established a confidential helpline (1-844-P2P-PEER) and an email address (p2p@mssny.org) so that physicians may connect with a peer 24/7. In addition to offering a trained, empathetic ear, peer supporters may provide information on specific resources that can offer further support, provide positive coping skills, or connect physicians to professionals for more focused assistance when needed. MSSNY has nearly 50 trained peer supporters across NYS who are just a phone call away.

A training session to become a peer supporter will be scheduled for the coming month. If you wish to become a trained peer supporter, please reach out to Cayla Lauder, MPH, Public Health Associate, at clauder@mssny.org.

If someone you know is struggling with life stressors, reach out to the P2P program to connect them to a peer supporter:

Email P2P@mssny.org or call 1-844-P2P-PEER (1-844-727-7337) and request that you be connected with a peer supporter.

New York Senate Bill Seeks to Cut Down on Red Tape Physicians Face with Insurance Companies
The Albany (NY) Times Union reports, “A new bill introduced in the New York state Senate this month seeks to cut down on the red tape doctors face with insurance companies when attempting to prescribe certain treatments and therapies to their patients.” The legislation “would establish a ‘Gold Card’ program requiring health insurers to exempt providers from prior authorization requirements – a process that involves obtaining approval from a patient’s health plan for certain treatments, tests and medical services before they will agree to cover them.” The Medical Society of the State of New York has “issued a statement…endorsing the New York bill, which does not yet have a companion bill in the Assembly.” MSSNY President Dr. Joseph Sellers said, “MSSNY is grateful to Sen. Breslin for his leadership and support on this important issue.” Dr. Sellers added, “The bill is a new and important part of our ongoing advocacy efforts to confront excessive prior authorization requirements that interfere with patient care delivery and access to the most effective treatments.”

MSSNY President Says State Delay of COVID-19 Booster Shot Mandate for Healthcare Workers is “The Right Choice”
In an interview with WRGB-TV Albany, Medical Society of the State of New York President Dr. Joseph Sellers discussed the state health department’s move to delay mandating COVID-19 booster shots for healthcare workers, saying, “I think the governor made the right choice here in coming down on the side of we need the people on site working in the hospitals. My job as a physician though is to still encourage people that they have confidence in getting the booster, but I think the mandate in the current climate, it was best to put it off.” The article adds, “The New York State Department of Health announced Friday it will reassess in three months whether steps need to be taken to increase booster rates.”

MSSNY’s Practice Tip of the Week: Is Your Office Planning to Move to a New Location?
If your office is planning a move to a new location, it’s important to remember to forward the information to insurance companies. With so many plans falling under one company, it’s necessary to share your change of address with ALL plans. This may be time consuming but by doing so you will continue to receive critical information from the insurance company—and continue to receive your insurance payments. Be sure to have your staff contact each plan and provide the change of address information to each in writing (keep a copy of that in a file for future reference). Don’t assume because you sent it to one plan that it will cross over. Keep in mind that each plan may have their own process/steps to do this.

If you have questions about this or any other insurance concern, contact MSSNY’s Director of Physician Payment and Practice, Heather Lopez, at 518.465.8085 X332 | hlopez@mssny.org
