New York is the Worst State in the Country to be a Physician According to Wallet Hub’s 2019 Report

March 27, 2019, Westbury, NY— As National Doctor’s Day approaches on March 30, the fact that New York has once again received the dubious distinction as the worst state in country to be a physician should be an embarrassment for our great state that has a reputation for having a world class health care system.

“Whether it’s our exorbitant and crushing medical liability insurance costs, having among the lowest Medicaid fee schedules in the country, or the excessive amount of mandates placed on physicians delivering care to their patients, it is becoming increasingly difficult for physicians to remain in practice here to provide needed patient care,” said Dr. Thomas Madejski, President of the Medical Society of the State of New York.

New York continues to lose a majority of the resident physicians that are trained in the state, in part due to this challenging practice environment.

“It is critical that our policymakers take steps to improve this environment, which include efforts to reduce our administrative burdens in delivering patient care and to bring down the cost of liability insurance,” said Dr. Madejski. “One such critically important measure would grant independent practice physicians the ability to collectively negotiate with insurers to reduce excessive administrative burdens. Policymakers should take actions to eliminate the hostile environment in which New York physicians practice.”
