COVID-19 Vaccination Program–Additional Dose Update

STATEMENT FROM THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

“As with every emergency use authorization (EUA) of COVID-19 vaccines and subsequent EUA modifications to date, following the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) deliberations and the CDC’s official recommendation yesterday to allow some people with weakened immune systems to receive a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine, the Health Commissioner immediately convened the State’s Clinical Advisory Task Force.

The Task Force discussed the data presented during the ACIP meeting and reviewed the CDC’s Clinical Considerations to inform NYS COVID-19 vaccination program guidance, which will be forthcoming. The Department will complete this process quickly, as it has in the past.

In the meantime, the Commissioner echoes ACIP’s recommendation that immunocompromised individuals should confer with their physicians regarding the appropriateness and timing for receiving an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Further, the Health Commissioner encourages physicians to proactively reach out to their immunocompromised patients to discuss the benefits of receiving an additional dose.”
