MSSNY Statement re: Rear Seatbelt Legislation

Statement attributable to:
Arthur Fougner, MD
President, Medical Society of the State of New York

“The Medical Society of the State of New York is proud to support the legislation calling for rear seat passengers to buckle up and to be safe.

“According to the insurance Institute for Highway Safety, adult rear-row occupants were less likely to use seat belts.  Only 70 percent of those ages 20 to 54 use restraints, and 86 percent of people 55 and older use them.  The adult rear seat unbuckled passengers are at greater risk for chest injuries and traumatic brain injuries than front seat passengers.”
